Easy Chilean Kneaded Bread

Can anyone tell me if there’s anything better than the smell of freshly baked bread? At least in Chile, we’re really good at making bread. And this Easy Chilean Kneaded Bread recipe is delicious and won’t take you long to prepare.

You can leave the bread baked overnight and bake it in the morning to enjoy for breakfast. The important thing is to leave it in a warm place so the yeast can do its work.

This is the easy homemade bread recipe I always make, exactly as you see it in the photos. I then store it in a large airtight container or simply use a Ziploc bag to keep it completely sealed, and it stays good for a couple of days. This bread is also delicious toasted or reheated.

If you take this freshly baked bread out of the oven and add butter, it’s an absolute delight. It’s also fantastic for making a variety of sandwiches.

As you can see in the photos below, the bread should double in volume before baking. Pay close attention to how your oven works to achieve the desired result, as every oven is different.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500 g (18 oz) flour
  • 7 g (.25 oz) dry yeast; OR 21 g (0.75 oz) fresh yeast
  • 8 g (0.3 oz; 1 teaspoon) sugar
  • 8 g (0.3 oz; 1 teaspoon) salt
  • 80 g (2.8 oz) shortening (I used vegetable shortening, but lard can be used), at room temperature
  • 250 ml (8.5 fl-oz) warm water

Instructions

  1. Place the flour, salt, yeast, sugar, and shortening in a bowl or mixer, and gradually add the water. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly.

  2. Then, knead the dough for about 5 minutes, either by hand or in a mixer.

  3. Next, roll the dough out into a cylinder and cut it into at least 8 portions. Shape each portion into a ball, then flatten and stretch it out by hand. Place each piece of dough on a baking sheet. Prick the dough with a fork.

  4. Let the dough rest in a warm spot in your kitchen for at least 1 hour.

  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

  6. Lightly spray or brush the top of each loaf with water and bake for 20 minutes.

Notes

  • For this recipe, it is not necessary to melt the shortening; you simply need to have it at room temperature before using it.
